Boston Terriers are delightful dogs to own. They are very adaptable to situations. They can play with kids or rest with elderly caregivers. To know one is to love one because each of them will have their own unique quirks. However, with this breed of dog, you may also have to deal with certain medical issues, most attributed to their flat face and slightly bulging eyes. What you may not realize, is that there are other potential issues that can affect these dogs.
Potential Health Concerns with Terriers
Boston Terriers are very prone to eye issues. Eye issues may include cataracts, eye ulcers, and glaucoma. This is because of their face shape, which can contribute to snoring and breathing issues. These dogs also may have issues with their knees slipping out of place. There are times that it may require surgery to treat. A frequent issue for terriers is deafness in one ear. However, it can affect both ears. One of the health issues that is surprising for some owners is the ones that happen because of their spine, which could also lead to a limp tail and possibly paralysis of their back end.
Dog Tails
All dogs can potentially have a dog tail fracture. Their tails are made up of tiny bones and joints that connect them. If you step on a dog’s tail, it can break. It may also fracture if they hit it against something or have a rowdy child pull on it. It can also dislocate. It can be difficult for a pet owner to know when a dog’s tail is broken, but some things you can look for include: kinks or bends in the tail, swelling, and pain for the dog. Another potential issue for a dog’s tail may be “limp tail”. If this is a problem for them, your dog will tuck their tail between their legs and may act as though they are in pain. Limp tail is caused by heavy exercise and swimming in cold water most of the time. If you notice your dog’s tail seems limp, you should take them to the vet to ensure it isn’t broken. If it is just limp tail, your dog may be back to normal within a few days.
Should You Worry About Your Dog’s Tail?
Limp tail is a condition that can affect any very active dog. Boston Terriers can be a little rowdy at times, but a lot of their tail issues stem from spinal issues; especially if you pet has a docked tail. A break in their tail can happen at any time. You know your dog better than anyone. If they are normally wagging their tail constantly because they are happy to see you, you should be concerned if they suddenly stop. You should consult with a vet if you notice they are not using their tail, having trouble walking, or yelp when you touch their tail. It will be the only way for you to ensure that your dog doesn’t have a serious injury or issue that otherwise may not heal properly.
